 note = {For a long time, English language teaching approaches have given greater priority to teaching fluency. It should be noted, though, that unorganized verbal practice deprives language learning of context, making any real development of communication skills impossible. The author argues that English language teaching should include skill-based instruction and an introduction to cultural practices（ education, thought, and literature） since these are crucial to the overall development of the learners into well-rounded beings. This book challenges the current trends associated with the teaching of English language that are embedded in a culture of excessive demands for efficiency and a mentality of only learning the language at a superficial level.
　英語教育において、従来の手法が批判され、流暢さを重視したオーラルメソッドでの教授法が賛美 されるようになって久しい。しかし、やみくもに口頭での練習を行うだけではその文章に中身が伴う ようにはならず、真にコミュニケーション能力を育成することはできない。著者は今後の社会を支え る人材を育成するために、英語教育において英語の「技能」と「文化（教養・思想・文学）」の指導 どちらかを軽視してはならないと主張している。本著は英語学習に効率を過剰に求め「言語だけでき るようになればよい」とする風潮に警鐘を鳴らす一冊となっている。},
