Within this trend, quite a few people have negative views regarding the use of literary materials in reading instruction. In fact, many of the leading teaching materials in university English education have shifted from literary works to newspaper articles. However, is it really the case that literary materials do not facilitate the “cultivation of communication skills” and are not suitable for reading instruction?
