 note = {As is well known, in recent English language education, the Courses of Study call for “nurturing practical communication skills”, and there is a trend toward emphasizing communication. Within this trend, quite a few people have negative views regarding the use of literary materials in reading instruction. In fact, many of the leading teaching materials in university English education have shifted from literary works to newspaper articles. However, is it really the case that literary materials do not facilitate the “cultivation of communication skills” and are not suitable for reading instruction? Based on student course surveys, many students feel interested in story and it encourages them to study English or read other American literary works.},
