 note = {Despite a narrow audience base, Stephen Colbert reached iconic status as host of the Colbert Report. Politically, however, he registered no meaningful nor long-lasting impact by any relevant metric--voter turnout, poll numbers, or policy shifts in the media or government. Comparative historical and content analysis will demonstrate how Colbert’s satirical and character code-switching undermined his effectiveness.
