However, in EFL contexts such as Japan, learning outcomes can differ to learners with greater opportunities for interaction in the target language. Consequently, it is crucial for educators to reevaluate what motivates their students to achieve learning outcomes. This essay explores engagement in literacy for EFL learners in Japan. With a focus on adult learners, it discusses barriers to effective education such as the deficit model, and highlights alternative teaching methods including implementing funds of knowledge and adopting a multimodal approach, to offer educators opportunities to reconceptualise their teaching pedagogies to facilitate classroom success.
