The field of International Relations has seen a growing interest in the topic of city diplomacy. Recent studies have highlighted the role of mayors and city officials in global relations, the growth of city networks, and the importance of the attractive charm of cities. This essay examines the topic of city diplomacy with a focus on current research and theory. It finds that the actual implementation of city diplomacy varies drastically by context.
