In 2001 the Thao people were officially recognized by the Taiwanese government as the `tenthaborigine' in Taiwan. Their traditional language is one of the `languages on the verge of extinction (endangeredlanguages)'with extremely few speakers. In addition, the influence of marital relations with Bunun has led the Thaolanguage to adopt many loan words from the Bunu language. This paper is concerned with the linguistic relationships and mutual recognition between families, relatives, andothers in the Thao society.A strict name ranking is used to classify members of Thao society by age. Elders are highly respected, and thefeeling of respecting an ancestor is particularly strong. However, this is maintained without creating a hierarchicalconsciousness. Although there is a work assignment by gender, there is no sex discrimination. Thao society places specialemphasis on the happiness of all Thao people; it is a society based on mutual cooperation and shared lifestyle withoutthe constraints of hierarchical order.}, pages = {57--68}, title = {人関係の言葉からみえてくるサオ族の社会}, year = {2011} }
