This paper looks at the dynamics involved as speakers decide whether to use the polite form (desu/masu) or the plain form (da-form) in Japanese discourse (commonly known as the speech level shift). The speech behavior was examined in 4 dyadic conversations between Japanese high school students and foreign exchange students, and were compared to 9 dyadic conversations including only Japanese high school students.
